Basketball Rules & Regulations

WARCHIEFS YOUTH SPORTS BASKETBALL RULES & REGULATIONS 2020

DIVISIONS

  • DRIBBLERS- KINDERGARTEN & FIRST GRADE (or 5 years old by January 1, 2020)
  • JUNIORS- SECOND GRADE & THIRD GRADE

ALL DIVISIONS:

  1. Players get in free.
  2. Coaches get in free (two per team). Coaches must sign in upon arrival.
  3. Arrive 20 minutes early to all games as games may begin early if time permits.
  4. NO outside basketballs allowed on game days! Basketballs brought in on game days will be taken away until owner leaves the gym.
  5. Players must provide their own basketball for practices.
  6. No outside food or drink on game days.
  7. Outside food and drink is allowed on practice days.
  8. Coaches: 2 technicals or 1 ejection will result in suspension from the next game. 2 ejections in a season will result in indefinite suspension from coaching for Warchiefs Youth Sports.
  9. Fans: Heckling of players, coaches, or referees will not be tolerated. A warning will be given on first offense. A second offense will result in ejection from the building.
  10. Profanity: No profanity of any kind is allowed from players, coaches, fans, etc. A warning will be given on first offense. A second offense will result in ejection from the building.
  11. NO smoking allowed on the premises- inside or outside before, during, or after games. Please leave the premises to smoke.
  12. Warchiefs Youth Sports reserves the right to make changes to rules and regulations at any time for the sole purpose of benefiting its participants. All changes will be in writing and distributed to any person or team it may affect.

DRIBBLERS

  1. Each player must play at least a total of 2 periods or 12 minutes.
  2. Jump ball to begin game.
  3. Substitutions are not allowed on made baskets. Substitutions allowed on time outs and out of bounds calls.
  4. All defensive players must play zone defense with at least one foot in the box for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, periods. Defensive players may only leave box on loose ball plays when playing zone defense. Defense must play man to man for 4th period. Defense may not pick up offense until offense crosses the grey volleyball line for 4th period (man-to-man).
      1. Zone Defense- Players may come out of the box for the following loose ball plays:
        1. Rebounds
        2. When a jump is made from the box in an attempt to block a shot. 
  5. No Pressing. When a team has secured possession of the basketball, all players must move to opposite side of the court.
  6. Fast breaks are only allowed during the last minute of 4th period.
  7. Offense must make 1 pass before a shot attempt with exception of fast breaks during minute of 4th period.
  8. No 3 pointers.
  9. If a team has a 6 point lead in 4th period, they must go back to playing zone defense with no fast breaks allowed.
  10. Fouls, Double dribbles, and traveling will be recognized and corrected for games 1 and 2, but player will keep possession of the basketball and no foul shots will be taken during running time. Once a team has 7 violations or fouls, the opposing team will receive 1 point. After the 1st point is given, if 5 more violations or fouls are made, the opposing team will receive 1 point and this will continue for the duration of the game.
  11. Half-time Free Throws: Each team will get 2 minutes to shoot free throws during half time. All players must participate. Players must line up and shoot one at a time behind the free throw line. The team to acquire the most shots in the 2 minutes, will receive 2 points added to their score.
  12. Games are four 6 minute periods, running time with a 1 minute break between periods and a 5 minute half-time.
  13. Each team gets 2 time-outs per half. Time outs are 30 seconds each.
  14. Players not on the court should remain seated on the team bench for the duration of the game. Only coaches and players allowed on team bench.
  15. One coach is allowed on the court during games during games 1-4. The coach on the court should remain within 5’ from each sideline on either side. The bench coach must stay behind the line and may not pass the half-court line. No coach on the court for games 5 and 6. Both coaches should follow the rules of a bench coach.
  16. Forfeit time will be game time.

JUNIORS

  1. Each player must play at least a total of 2 periods or 12 minutes.

  3. Substitutions are not allowed on made baskets. Substitutions allowed on time outs, free throws and out of bounds calls.
  4. All defensive players must play zone defense with at least one foot in the box for 1st period. Defensive players may only leave box on loose ball plays for 1st period. Defense must play man to man for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th periods. Defense may not pick up offense until offense crosses the grey volleyball line for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th period (man-to-man).
    1. Zone Defense- Players may come out of the box for the following loose ball plays:
      1. Rebounds
      2. When a jump is made from the box in an attempt to block a shot. 
  5. Pressing allowed during last minute of 4th period ONLY. Other than last minute off 4th period, when a team has secured possession of the basketball, all players must move to opposite side of the court.
  6. If a team has a 10 point lead in 2nd, 3rd or 4th period, they must go back to playing zone defense with no pressing or fast breaks allowed.
  7. Fast breaks are only allowed during the 4th period.
  8. 3 pointers are allowed in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th periods only.
  9. Fouls, Double dribbles, and traveling will be recognized and corrected for weeks 1 and 2, but player will keep possession of the basketball and no foul shots will be taken during running time. Once a team has 7 violations or fouls, the opposing team will receive 1 point. After the 1st point is given, if 5 more violations or fouls are made by a team, the opposing team will receive 1 point and this will continue for the duration of the game. Beginning with week 3, violations will result in turnover of possession or foul shot(s) at the discretion of the official.
    1. FOUL SHOT RULES
      1. Clock wills stop for foul shots.
      2. Shooter must stand behind the free throw line & can’t move until the ball touches  the rim or backboard.
      3. 3 defenders & 2 offense must line up at the box and can move after the shooter releases the ball to shoot. 
      4. 2 defenders & 2 offense stay behind the 3 point line until ball touches the rim or backboard. 
  10. Beginning with week 3, 5 fouls disqualifies a player.
  11. Half-time Free Throws: Each team will get 2 minutes to shoot free throws during half time. All players must participate. Players must line up and shoot one at a time behind the free throw line. The team to acquire the most shots in the 2 minutes, will receive 2 points added to their score.
